Overview:
General Simonds, commander of the 2nd Canadian Corps, had insisted that he have a supply road with which to maintain the momentum of his attack and planned to use the Goch-Xanten railroad bed for this purpose. The raised track was flanked on both sides by low, soggy farmland. Feeling pressure from higher command, Simonds ordered the 4th Canadian Armoured Division to seize the Hochwald Gap and continue on to Xanten. The western entrance to the gap was controlled by a small rise, Point 73.Attacker: Canadian (Algonquin Regiment and South Alberta Regiment, 4th Canadian Armoured Division)
