Overview:
The opening rush of Operation Epsom had carried the 15th Scottish Division south for two miles through the towns of Cheux and le Haut du Bosq. By nightfall Haupsturmfuerhrer Siegel's 4 remaining tanks of the 8th Panzer Company had stopped the advance at the rail line just north of Grainville. During the night Siegel's panzers had towed the 105mm guns of the 12th SS artillery to safety from Colleville into Grainville. Siegel's crewmen were exhausted and were catching up on their sleep. They were guarded by equally tired infantrymen of the HQ Btn. All were huddling under capes to avoid the violent rain. Sturmbannfurhrer Schoeps had decided to command his regiment from a safer place further in the rear. As Siegel escorted Schoeps from his bunker to his Kubelwagon the two prepared to bid farewell.Attacker: British (Raiding party, 10th Highland Light Infantry, 15th Scottish Division)
