Overview:

By the middle of November of 1943, the British Eighth Army in Italy had closed up against the German Winter Line along the Sangro River. The operation to breach the Winter Line called for a forced crossing of the Sangro followed by the capture of the transportation centers of Fossacesia, Santa Maria, Romagnoli, Andreoli and Mozzagrogna. After successfully gaining a bridgehead across the Sangro, the British 78th Division held open the corridor for the Indian 8th Division. The 8th Division's 17th Indian Infantry Brigade was tasked with assaulting Mozzagrogna and Santa Maria. Unfortunately, the poor weather continued to aid the defense; roads into Mozzagrogna from the south had washed out, and the attack would have to go in without armor support. The assault force, consisting of two companies from the 1/5 Royal Gurkha Rifles, finally managed to break into the village after midnight.
