As soon as 15 April the troops of the 1st Battalion of the Gebirgsjagers, under Major von Schleebrugge advanced towards the Swedish border. They went by train to Hundalen where they met a score of Marines who had grabbed a Norwegian MMG. The Norwegian Major Omdal had succeeded in fleeing from Narvik with about 200 men. He had settled in the railway station of a remote hamlet, lost in a barren landscape of lakes and rocks, covered with a thick layer of snow.
