Overview:

The reinforced Aufklärungs-Abteilung Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler started out towards Lake Kastoria over the Kilsura Pass. This advance by a motorized reconnaissance battalion over a high mountain pass, involved a record climb of 800 metres in altitude, on a road built for carts was a performance just in terms of transportation technology. Leibstandarte remained mounted until it was south of Joanina, where it encountered the Kilsura Pass and faced a gate in the mountains defended by an enemy fighting with firm resolve. At 1530 hours, the spearhead of the reinforced Aufklarungsabteilung ran into a partially demolished bridge south of Lehovon. The bridge was unsuitable for vehicle traffic, however dismounted infantry could cross without a problem. As the first Grenadier set foot on the rubble, machine-gun fire opened up from the hillsides. The Abteilung was now forced to clear the Greeks from the mountaintops so as to allow the repairs to the bridge.
