Overview:

"Firefighters of Chernobyl" -- In early October 1943, the Red Army tried to exploit its successes of the Summer campaign and maintain the initiative against a German army which was striving to maintain adequate defensive lines before the Dniepr River. The Russian 13th Army, belonging to the Central Front, managed to achieve a bridgehead on the west bank of the Pripyat, a wide tributary of the river, near the town of Chernobyl. The Russians faced violent counterattacks, but with the assistance of local Partisans, were able to retain the foothold. The 4th Panzer Division held the sector, marking the boundary between the Army Groups Centre & South. If the wooded and swampy terrain made mechanized movement difficult, the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Panzer Division was a major asset. The 4th Panzer Aufklarungs Abteilung, had in large part re-armed with modern lightweight vehicles including the Luchs “Lynx” light tank. When in November, the Soviet pressure increased, PzAD4 found itself moving from breach to breach, curbing local crises.
