Overview:

The GNR Gruppo Corazzato “Leonessa” fought, for the most part, against the partisans but as the war came to a close, on 28 April 1945, some of their tanks would find themselves pitted against American forces. When the Allied breakthrough sent the bulk of the German and Italian forces stationed in Piacenza into outright retreat there remained a few determined men, ready to stand and fight. Among them were the “Leonessa”, and men from the Italian 29th SS Division “Italiana”.

2022-03-05(A) Andy Bagley vs Matt Ellis Italian winSecond playing of this scenario recently, and despite getting some useful DRs early on I was well beaten as the Americans by a soundly played defence. The way to win as the Italians in this scenario – as my opponent found – seems to be to fall back to a defence concentrated around the three roads in the exit area. The Americans will find it extremely difficult to win without exiting tanks, and I found myself having to run through a hail of PF, Psk and side/rear tank MA shots from the remaining Italian tanks to get off the board. I got two tanks off via less-defended roads, but it wasn’t enough. Perhaps I was too cautious early on, but a more aggressive approach would have been risky, so I think this scenario probably favours the Axis.

2022-02-08(D) Andy Bagley vs Neil Brunger Italian winSome doubts about this scenario’s historical accuracy, but it was great fun to play! Lots of challenges for both sides: the Italian tanks are very weak (though decent MGs), so how best to use them when a single hit from a M4A1 will kill them? For the Americans, those Italian tanks may not be a threat but PSKs and PFs certainly are. And how should the Partisans set up in the village to cause maximum nuisance value to the Italians?
In our game the Partisans set up in a single building, so I surrounded them with three Italian tanks and a squad, and they didn’t last long. The Americans though made swift progress using smoke and WP to cover their infantry’s advance, and good shooting to knock out Italian tanks. However, one M4A1 malf’d its MA, another fell to a PF, and I managed to immobilise a third, so the Americans needed to exit infantry as well to win.
Then high drama on the final American player-turn when the malf’d MA repaired, but a lucky Shock result stopped that tank in the last hex before exit! Two other tanks got off though, one carrying infantry, so it was all down to whether a last American squad + leader could run through German fire to escape. A 6-3 shot was too much for them however, so the Italians won the narrowest of victories.
2019-05-07(A) Michael Rodgers vs Erik Lindblad American / Partisan winErik Lindblad and I played V24 EAGLES AGAINST LIONS, as I continue to prepare for CASLO in May. This scenario has several unique items; Italian SS units, for example. They are portrayed by five 4-6-8 squads ( with to 9-1 leaders ) with a ridiculous amount of SW: 4 LMG and 2 PSK. The Italians also have seven tanks to use in their defense: 4 M14/41 and 3 M15/42. It is April 1945 and an American force consisting of 5 M4A1, 5 squads, 3 leaders, 2 MMG and 3 BAZ45 are trying to cross boards 10 and 41 for exit VP. To spice things up, the Americans can set up 3 partisan squads in a small area of board 41. To spice things up even more, the Italian player can choose to place units in the same hexes as the partisans for some pre-game CC. I placed the three partisans in three adjacent building hexes on a hill. Erik put a squad and leader in two of their locations and he placed a tank adjacent to the middle squad. The results of the pre-game CC phase were one dead partisan squad and one melee which lasted until turn two, when everyone elimninated each other. The rest of Erik's defence was spread across the board, but with only a couple of tanks on the American right. Erik had passed up a couple of good level 2 locations in which to put units. My American units entered using the right quarter of their board edge. The infantry tried to stay out of sight at the beginning. Four tanks positioned to engage Italian tanks, some of which were concealed in buildings or woods. My one surviving partisan squad managed to make it difficult for Erik to shift one of his squads to where the action was, but it got there for the end game. His tanks died fairly quickly, if I saw them. It wasn't until the third turn that a DM marker finally went on the board. By the beginning of American turn four, I had all five tanks ready to exit (more than enough). Erik had only one squad with a PSK in my way. I fired WP at it and rolled snakes. The only TEM was height advantage. The squad failed the MC, allowing three Shermans and a squad to exit for the win.
