Overview:

When Japan, as an Axis member, went to war against the Allies in December 1941, Italy kept its concession, and in spite of near total isolation, Tianjin remained "Italian" territory. The armistice on September 1943 made things more complicated, and the Imperial Japanese Army prepared to eliminate the Italian garrison. The IJA gathered an infantry regiment reinforced by armor and light artillery, along with some gunboats on the nearby Hai River.

2020-09-01(D) Andy Bagley vs Neil Brunger Japanese winThis looked a really interesting and unusual scenario, but I was a bit disappointed in it. Not so much because a Japanese 50mm mortar scored a critical hit on a stone building which then affected all three (leader + 2 squads) of my units there AND got a K/2 result against each of them (honest!). More because the Japanese can attack from at least three sides, possibly four, which means the Italians will quickly be forced back to the VC buildings. The endgame can then be a rather tedious game of hide-and-seek where the Japanese chase the Italians round these multi-level buildings while the Italians try to hang on in there with sufficient squads to win. Clearly in some playings they have succeeded, but in my case that critical hit combined with some successful Japanese banzais meant that I conceded at the end of T4.
