Overview:
LtCol Taplett, whose call sign was "Dark Horse Six," and his 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines having bested the last of the KPA in the hills west of Seoul was now in a friendly race of sorts with 1st Marines to see who could raise more US flags over the city of Seoul. The 3rd Battalion was well poised to reach Government House from its line of departure on Hill 17 from where they could see two North Korean flags flying over the dome of the capital building. The assault got underway at 0645, with G and I Companies in the lead, H Company, which had suffered heavily in the attack down the spur of An-san the previous day, was in battalion reserve. At first having entered the western suburbs resistance was sporadic at best, mainly sniper fire, but as the two companies pressed deeper into the city, which was smoldering and cast a pall of low haze about the roads and alleyways, the Marines began to run into barricades and machine gun positions.Attacker: American (USMC) (G and I Companies, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines and 2nd Platoon, A Company, 1st Marie Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division)
Defender: North Korean (Seoul City Regiment, 78th Independent Infantry Regiment and the 25th Infantry Brigade, with 111th Security Regiment, 513th Artillery Regiment, 10th Railroad Regiment, and 17th Rifle Division)
