Overview:
The crossing was proceeding slowly. Gains were expanded and more reinforcements were crossing the Seine. Still, machine gun and fire from hidden anti-aircraft guns from the overlooking heights continued to impede the reinforcements trying to get across. Major Grubb, the commander of B Company of the 1st Worchestershires was ordered to get to those heights and clear out these positions. Instead of taking the path to the left, which seemed to lead nowhere, the Major opted to stick to the main road and then sweep upwards. As the lead squad approached the fork in the road, machinegun fire erupted.Attacker: British (Elements of B/1st Worchestershires, 214th Infantry Brigade, 43rd Wessex Division)

2024-04-18 | (A) Jeff Wright | vs | Brett Snyder | British win (VASL Log) | The British started out by sending a small force to the south/west to flank the hilltop, while the main thrust would be straight up the middle. While the Germans were a much smaller force in comparison, even with the much needed reinforcements, their HIP made for a cautious advance up the steep hill, which also slowed things down. The Germans immediately opened up on the flanking force, causing them to seek cover, but the main force managed to get across the road and start working up the hill. One of the AA guns malfed early on, which would be a boon for the British advances. Sadly for the Germans it would shortly later permanently disable. The German HMG finally made an appearance, but being south of the road, it was to be quickly ineffective and and not able to get into the fight to make any difference. The British were able to neutralize the MMG and get the flanking force back in action. A hero was created that added a lot of boost to carry the British to the win. Along the way the Brits did try their chances at some CC and didn't fare too well. They lost more often than not, or ended up getting hung up longer than planned, even with superior odds. In the end, the the British were able to take out the last AA gun and methodically take each of the victory hexes, break the German defenders, and keep the pressure up so they weren't able to recover. | ||
