Overview:
Dawn of 10 January held up hope for OKW that their stalled NORDWIND offensive was being reinvigorated. Hatten was largely theirs, and the neighboring village of Rittershoffen appeared lightly defended. Beyond those villages, the terrain was more suitable to panzers in this otherwise mountainous region. To complete the victory, fresh men and tanks from Panzer-Division 21 were committed. Despite the setbacks of the previous day, the Americans remained equally confident they could reestablish the original line east of Hatten. They too were committing new infantry, with the soldiers of 315th Infantry Regiment replacing the depleted battalions of the 242nd. Both sides gathered for an attack on the morning of 10 January, but the Germans struck first with an assault at 0800hrs, just a few minutes before the Americans.Attacker: German (Bataillon I, Panzergrenadier-Regiment 125 and Panzer-Abteilung 1, Panzer-Regiment 22, Panzer-Division 21)
Defender: American (F Company, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division and B Company, 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion with B Company, 827thTank Destroyer Battalion)
