Overview:
Having raced to get to Manila in early Februruy, the 37th Infantry Division and 1st Cavalry Division spent the next four weeks trying to take it. Despite General MacArthur's pronouncement on 6 February that "Manila had fallen'' it soon became very clear to XIV Corps that the Japanese remaining in the city had no intention of pulling out. Under Admiral Iwabuchi, they were determined to leave no one alive or anything useful after the battle was over. The task of removing the Japanese from Manila was daunting, yet General MacArthur expected nothing less than complete victory.Attacker: American (37th Infantry Division and 1st Cavalry Division)
