Overview:
Benito Mussolini had declared war on 10 June, but his generals dithered, and no attack had been launched. The French were already beaten, and Paris had been taken a week earlier. Mussolini needed a trophy to boost Italian morale. That trophy was going to be Nice. On 20 June at midday, Mussolini's troops were finally ready, and his best divisions led an attack supported by what little armor he had. French troops knew their country was on the point of collapse but were not prepared to give an inch of ground to the Italians. As the enemy came towards them, they spat on the ground, primed their weapons, and prepared to show that they were not beaten yet.Attacker: Italian (Alpine Army Corps)

2024-09-22 | (A) Vic Lauterbach | vs | TS | French win | This great little game encapsulated a big appeal of ASL: quickly changing fortunes! My Italian LMORs and HMG couldn't miss for three turns, and it looked like a cakewalk for my 447s, but when they closed in on the French, they couldn't pass a Morale Check. My force melted down into stacks of broken 346s and 136s. Despite heavy losses, Trevor's French held out (two leaders were wounded twice), and his 37 INF made short work of the L5 tankettes. The Peugeot quickly broke its AAMG but effectively blocked the 32A6 exit road. I managed to take four buildings (one after winning a 3-turn Melee) but my few remaining GO Italians couldn't reach the back buildings and ended 4 VP short. (Even with morale support from Renato, who observed the game!)
2024-08-12 | (A) Andy Bagley | vs | Magne Stenkløv | D | Italian win | The French had the balance in this game, but not the luck as their 37mm Inf gun broke down on its first shot then rolled 6 for repair, and my sniper took out their 9-1 leader early. I concentrated my attack on the eastern flank, with a smaller force causing a distraction from the west. The French were never able to silence the kill stack with my 9-2 leader and HMG, so steady progress captured all the victory building south of the road by my turn 6, and with a couple of tanks already existed, that gave me sufficient VPs for the win. Still a very good scenario though.

2024-04-25 | (A) Jeff Wright | vs | Jeremy Busby | Italian win (VASL Log) | The Italians came in pretty balanced from the west and south. The French had a well laid out defence to anticipate this or adapt if the Italians chose to come in primarily/only from the south. The Italian advance from the west was pretty aggressive and quickly thinned out the French defenses. The southern advance was more methodical and the French held out well. The French infantry gun unfortunately malfed on its first shot and then proceeded to be eliminated the next turn, which didn't help the French defense. However, the French were able to immobilize one of the Italian tanks by street fighting, when the Italians got a bit too aggressive. The Italians also malf'd one of their main arms, which gave them a bit of pause. The Italians kept the pressure up, breaking as expected and creating a hero, which helped the southern advance. It was still looking kind of bleak for the French as they kept having to fall back, running out of room to defend, until things started to take a turn for the worse for the Italians. The Italians regained their composure, and seized the opportunity to lock up the French in several locations with vehicle bypass, allowing superior forces to advance in and wipe out the French in close combat. It was a bold move that paid off for the Italians ending the game early.
2024-03-21 | (A) Neal Ulen | vs | Scott | Italian win | Full AAR here: https://asl-players.net/asl-aar-latecomers-j223/ The French took this one square on the jaw and couldn't hang with the elite Italian quads, HMG, and good leadership (9-2). I kept my Italian tanks mostly out of it after firing one and breaking it's MA pretty early, thus making it worthless for VP and succeptible to recall if I permanently disabled it. But I actually repaired its CMG, but I think I only fired a tank one more time the entire game. They kept out of LOS of the single exit hex where I knew the INF gun was set up adjacent to. As soon as I had a chance I drove three AFVs off the map after already capturing 4 buildings (18 VP of the 16 needed). All Scott had left were 2 GO squads, a wounded leader, and a couple 8-0 leader cowering deep in the woods. He tossed in the towel at that point knowing he couldn't recapture any of the buildings with all my remaining MMCs and leader counters protecting them (I had 18 VP and hadn't exited any MMC off the board yet). Feels like the French have to play a perfect game to win this one, but the record to the right says otherwise, sooooo...I dunno, felt kind of one sided to us. Not my favorite scenario ever. |
