Overview:

In early February 1943, the Russians were working hard to liberate the Kuban region. A major operation to capture Novorossiysk had been launched. Landings at Ozereyka Bay had gone badly, but a smaller landing at Stanichka by Major Caesar Kunikov’s 305th Naval Infantry Battalion had succeeded. Kunikov’s force had established a small bridgehead. Originally, Kunikov’s small 800 man force had been designed to draw Germans away from the main effort at Ozereyka, but building on his success, Kunikov dug in around a brick schoolhouse and awaited reinforcements.
