Overview:

The Grebbe Line was the principal defensive position denying entry into Fortress Holland from the east. The position was anchored on the southern end by a series of low wooded hill complexes, collectively known as Grebbe Hill, which abutted the Lower Rhine. Occypying the southern part of the hill was the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, commanded by Major Willem Landzaat. A line of trenches with casemates every 3000-4000 meters mad up the mainposition in this area. To the front was an outpost line and extensive innudated areas designed to slow down attacking enemy. To the rear was the Ouwehands Dierenpark, an animal park, which had not been completely vacated of its former occupants. Following a preparatory bombardment, the outpost line was attacked at sunrise on 11 May and the defenders slowly fell back to the trenches on the hill. The front line proper was not penetrated by the Germans until the afternoon of 12 May, setting the stage for the final assault the next day.
