Overview:

"Sprung from Hell!" - - On July 29, 1944, Operation Cobra opened a first breach in the German defenses in Normandy. A speed race began between the Americans, whose armored divisions attempted to make a breakthrough towards Coutances, and the Germans who desperately tried to rebuild their front south of Saint−Lô. The latter threw all available troops into the battle, among which a Kampfgruppe from the 2. Panzer−Division. This experienced but diminished unit sought contact with the German divisions encircled west of the breach. In this aim, the road crossings in the Tessy−sur−Vire area had to be held. For the Americans, the goal was exactly the opposite: to take these points so as to keep the enemy reinforcements coming from the east from joining forces with their brothers. On the 28th at dawn, General Maurice Rose from the 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels" launched a strong recon party towards Tessy and the Villebaudon crossing.
