Overview:
While the paratroopers of 517th PIR were taking control of the crossroads at Melines, a battery from the 653rd Anti Tank Battalion provided overwatch protection from the heights north of the hamlet. At about 1830 hours a column of Panthers approached from the Roumiere woods, from the direction of the road leading to Wy. The Panzers were coming directly from a German repair depot and their crews were completely unaware of the fighting taking place in their proximity. American gunners responded immediately, but were unable to bring the lead Panther into their gun-sights.Attacker: German (116th Panzer Division)
