Overview:

"The Weakest Link" -- On 25th October 1942, in the Caucasus, General von Mackensen’s III Panzer Corps launched its offensive at a last chance to capture Grozny or Baku. Surprise was complete, and with its headquarters destroyed by the Luftwaffe, the Soviet 37th Army suffered heavy losses and fell back in disorder. By 1st November, the attackers faced the defenses in front of Ordzhonidzke, the last blocking position on the road to Chechnya, but Russian resistance then hardened as climatic conditions degraded quickly. The German forces were simply too weak, and the Red Army concentrated forces on its flanks. On 6th November, two Guards Rifle Corps, well supported by tanks capture the small town of Gisel, thus cutting off the 13th Panzer Division attacking Ordzhonidzke. At the same time, Rifle divisions attacked from the south with the same goal. Von Mackensen had to act quickly to save his isolated division…
