Overview:

In the spring of 1942, as the USSR absorbed the shock of Barbarossa, it remained in a difficult situation. Their industry still does not produce enough to compensate for the enormous losses of 1941 and, in these circumstances, Allied aid, however small, played a crucial role. Offensives are launched to secure the Murmansk railway. On April 24, the 26th Army attacked the opposing III Corps west of the Louhi railway node. As the frontal assault failed, two brigades of skiers and Marine infantry infiltrated and approached the locality of Kiestinski. German-Finnish reserves arrived and the attackers found themselves isolated between Kiestinski and the village of Ahvenlati in the north. On May 2, supported by the tanks of the Panzer-Abteilung 40, the Finnish infantrymen fought to regain control of the road towards Ahvenlati, a crucial logistical axis.
