Overview:
While the 7th Marines remained tied up mopping up on the Kimpo Peninsula, the 1st Marines moved east along the south bank of the Han River and cleared the southern approaches to Seoul in and around Yong-dungpo, but were prevented from crossing the Han itself, because the bridges into Seoul had been blown. However, the 5th Marines had crossed to the north bank of the river several miles to the west of the city and were moving rapidly eastwards. Some two miles outside the city limits, the 5th Marines encountered a series of hills benchmarked 296, 56, 88, 27 and 105, confusingly of which there were three. The latter were quickly re-designated 105-N, 105-C and 105-S, for north, central and south. it was here in this string of hills, which had once served as a training ground for Japanese forces during their many years of occupation, that the North Korean commander, Major General Wol, in charge of the outer defenses of Seoul positioned his primary units: the 25th Infantry Brigade, the 78th Independent Infantry Regiment and the Seoul City Regiment, which up until then had been the garrison for Seoul. in an unorthodox move, Wol's main line of resistance strung throughout these hills was in the center rather than on the flanks. Here a small rather non-descript hill, more like a knoll, numbered 56 was a hornet's nest of defenses and weapons. It was into this overall line of defenses that the 5th Marines ran up against on the 22nd of September.Attacker: American (USMC) / South Korean (No more details)
