Overview:
The 38cm Sturmmörser, known as the Sturmtiger, was an impressive weapon, but ultimately just another waste of valuable resources at a time when German could ill afford it. Less than 20 vehicles came on the line in the second half of 1944 in an effort to stem the Allied tide that was flooding into Germany. To that end, Panzer Sturmmörser Kompanie (PzStuMrKp) 1000 was deployed east of the Roer River when the Americans launched their offensive on 23 February. After only three days, the U.S. Ninth Army's Operation GRENADE was succeeding mightily in coordination with Operation BLOCKBUSTER under the First Canadian Army to the north. Ninth Army commander Lt. General William H. Simpson was ready to turn his armored force loose as soon as XIX Corps could prepare the way, and 30th Infantry Division attacked between Garzweiler and Elsdorf to do so.Attacker: American (Company C, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division)
Defender: German (Panzer-Sturmmörser-Kompanie 1000 and Volksgrenadier-Division 363)
