Overview:
Lieutenant General Takuma Nishimura's Imperial Guards Division was attacking southeast from Malacca towards Muar. While the Japanese 4th Regiment moved along the coast, Colonel Takeo Iwaguro's 5th Regiment attacked inland toward Bakri. Lieutenant Colonel John Charles Robertson (commanding the 2/29th Battalion) arrived with his unit during the afternoon of 17 January. Robertson deployed his rifle companies in the jungle astride the Julan Murar Road (Route 24) near mile post 101. A+B Companies were north of the road while C Company and Battalion HQ were on the south side. Though Robertson did not believed the Japanese to pose an armored threat, he reluctantly positioned a 2-pounder anti-tank gun south of the bend in the road. Shortly after dawn the sound of approaching tanks were heard.Attacker: Japanese (Gotta da Tank Company and 5th Konoye Regiment, Imperial Guards Division)
